The Occupy Wall Street movement is a much needed response to decades of growing inequality, financial deregulation, and zero accountability for the crimes that brought about our current economic crisis. Millions throughout the nation and across globe who feel they have no voice in our political system have come to embrace “Occupy” as an expression of their anger, frustration and hope.

Ten years later, it is time for us to give voice to our own growing frustration by aligning firmly with the Occupy movement and making 9/11 one of the key issues the Occupy movement stands for.

On Saturday November 19 and Sunday November 20, we will march from Liberty Plaza to Building 7 and occupy the park in front of Building 7 until nightfall. We hope this will mark the beginning of a sustained Occupy Building 7 movement that will grow and finally bring meaningful attention to the obvious demolition of World Trade Center Building 7 and the dire need for a new 9/11 investigation. At 2pm each day we will hold a General Assembly to discuss the direction and continuation of the Occupy Building 7 occupation after November 20.

Most of the protesters at Liberty Plaza are keenly aware of 9/11. A lot of them already knew about it; others have been educated over the last several weeks thanks to the 9/11 activists who have given their time and energy to be there. Let us hope that by the time November 19 rolls around, there will be hundreds, if not thousands of Occupy activists eager to help us make Occupy Building 7 a part of the broader Occupy movement.

Lupe Fiasco Talks 9/11 Conspiracy at New York Protest

Lupe Fiasco has been known to espouse some controversial views about American society and government, and over the weekend he put his money where his mouth is by attending a large protest rally in downtown New York. Dubbed “Occupy Wall Street,” the protesters say they were inspired by recent revolutions in the Arab world to use “mass occupation to restore democracy in America.”

While at the protest, Lupe was interviewed by an organization called We Are Change. He shared his views about the need to investigate 9/11 and the existence of a “New World Order.”

“There was never really a real, proper investigation,” Lupe said of 9/11 and the collapse of 7 World Trade Center or “Building 7,” which many conspiracy theorists maintain was detonated by the U.S. government. “It’s just something that always stood out as a sort of elephant in the room for me.”

Numerous public investigations by the National Institute of Standards and Technology and others have provided evidence that the lower levels of 7 World Trade Center caught fire after the North Tower fell and burned for hours before its eventual collapse. But on his song “Words I Never Said,” Lupe poked at the issue.

“9/11, Building 7, Did they really pull it?” he rhymed.

“I think the New World Order is something that is deliberate and in the public,” Lupe said, when asked about secret meetings by “elites” in order to consolidate power. 

“I don’t think it’s as nefarious as a lot of people make it out to be. It’s just a lot of things that we silently allow to happen,” he said. Lupe cited average citizens who own stock in certain corporations via their 401(k) or who support ExxonMobile by filling up their gas tank as being complicit in the system that upholds the status quo.

Lupe clarified that he doesn’t want to push an agenda, but sees himself as a critical thinker.

“I’m not on any side of the fence,” he said at one point. “My thing is, let’s just get to the truth.”

France: 58% Doubt the Official 9/11 Version, Only 14% Know About Building 7

Ten years after, how do the French perceive the events of September 11, 2001? With the support of its members and sympathizers, the French association ReOpen911 has commissioned a survey on the subject by an independent organization and have published their results on September 9. 

To this date, two surveys of this type have been made available in France: one by “TNS Sofres/Logica” for the French newsmagazine “NouvelObs” and another by World Public Opinion which was conducted in France as well as in 16 other countries. These surveys, which date back to September 2008, are already three years old, and the questions asked at the time do not measure the degree of skepticism of the population regarding the official story of the 9/11 Commission and the Bush administration.

For this reason, the French association ReOpen911 requested an opinion poll by HEC Junior Consulting. The official junior company of the business school HEC Paris, HEC Junior Consulting was ranked first in its sector by the newsmagazine “Expansion” in 2009. The school has also been a finalist for the CNJI award for excellence every year since 2004. The survey was conducted in June 2011 based on a cross-section sample of the French population [1].

This survey is very revealing about the opinion of the French on the subject of 9/11.

Poll Results Summary

Key results:

• 58% of the French population express doubts about the official version, compared to only 31% who express no doubts.
• Only 14% know that three towers collapsed on September 11, 2001.
• Nearly half of French respondents (49%) believe that US authorities may have let the attacks occur.
• One third (34%) believe that some US authorities may have been involved in the attacks.
• 49% are favorable to opening an independent inquiry to determine more about the events.
• Only 28% consider that the media have informed the public about September 11 in the fullest possible manner.

Poll Questions

Question 1: Would you say that 9/11 is still a topical issue?

Remarkably, ten years after the event, 65% of the French population consider that 9/11 is still a topical issue.

Despite the announced death of Bin Laden, the repatriation of troops from Iraq and the expected repatriation of troops from Afghanistan, the uprisings in the Arab world and a highly eventful 2011 in general (financial crisis, Fukushima disaster, etc.), the French do not consider the issue out-of-date.

Question 2: Do you believe the Bush administration said everything it knew about the 9/11 attacks?

The well-known reporter, Eric Laurent, author of a deep inquiry into the subject, spoke of 911 as “a collection of lies, surrounded by mystery” (France 2 television program “On a tout Essayé”, October 12, 2004, 01:35 min). Today, 72% of the French believe that the Bush administration has not said everything it knew about the events. 

In comparison, a survey conducted in Germany by “TNS Emnid” for the magazine “Welt der Wunder” posed the following question: 

Do you believe that the US government told the entire truth about the 2001 attacks?

French HEC survey: No; 72%, Yes; 15.6%
German TNS survey: No; 89.5%, Yes; 9.2%

The percentage is significantly higher in Germany where 89.5% of the population believe the US government did not tell the entire truth. This is also the opinion in the US where, as early as 2006, 81% of the population believed that the administration was not telling the entire truth. (CBS News / New York Times poll, October 2006) [2].

Question 3: What is your opinion of the official version of the attacks on September 11?

58% of those surveyed express doubts about the official version, compared to only 31% who accept it as the truth.

In a context where public expression of doubt, even when expressed cautiously, is met with violent opposition, 58% is a surprising score. Although a majority of the French population is skeptic, skeptics are generally presented in a negative light and as being a tiny majority by the media.

It is worth pointing out that skepticism concerning the official version of 9/11 is increasing significantly in France. Skeptics, who comprised only between 20% and 30% of the French population surveyed in 2008 (based on two surveys from September 2008), comprise 58% three years later. 

The number of persons in France expressing serious doubts is however smaller than those in the US where, as early as 2006, 28% believed that the members of the Bush administration had “all lied” (CBS News / New York Times poll, October 2006) [2], compared to 12% in France in 2011.

Question 4: How many towers collapsed on September 11, 2001?

Open question (responders were not prompted) 

Only 14% of the French population know that three towers fell on 9/11.

A comparative analysis between question 3 and question 4 shows that people who know about the collapse of World Trade Center 7 are more incline to express doubts about the official version than those who don’t know about this building.

Question 5: During the last few years, would you say the media have tended to:

Only 28% of French respondents consider that the media informed the public about September 11 in the fullest possible manner. 

Much can be learned by comparing this information with the results of TNS Sofres / La Croix de 2011 study which reveal that 40% of the French population believe that the quality of media is deteriorating as opposed to 21% who believe it is improving. 

Question 6: Do you think that US authorities were informed in advance of the attacks and let the attacks occur?

Question 7: Do you think that parts of the US authorities were involved in carrying out the attacks?

Nearly half of those surveyed (49%) believe that US authorities may have let the attacks occur. 

A third of those surveyed (34%) believe that some US authorities may have been involved in carrying out the attacks.

Question 8: Would you be favorable toward opening:

• an in-depth public debate on the events of 9/11?

• an independent inquiry to find out more about these events?

It should also be noted here that almost half (48%) of all New Yorkers are favorable to opening a new inquiry on the collapse of building 7 (Stena Research Institute survey, May 2011).

Will Canada Arrest Dick Cheney for War Crimes?

Dick Cheney is coming to Vancouver on September 26 to promote his book In My Time: A Personal and Political Memoir. But Vancouver lawyer Gail Davidson has other plans for one of the most controversial figures of the modern era, a powerful man who publicly admitted having allowed torture.

The cofounder of the international group Lawyers Against the War wants the government of Canada either to bar the former U.S. vice president from entering the country or, if he’s allowed in, to arrest and prosecute him for torture, war offences, and crimes against humanity. And if Canada isn’t keen on punishing the ex–vice president to former president George W. Bush, Davidson argues, then it should extradite Cheney to a country that is willing and able to prosecute him.

One of the most vocal defenders of U.S. foreign policy, specifically the invasions of Afghanistan and Iraq, Cheney is the first featured speaker in the 2011–12 series of Vancouver’s Bon Mot Book Club.

“It’s a bit chilling that they would invite a mass murderer as their guest to Canada,” Davidson told the Georgia Straight by phone, “when any one of them would know full well that because of the founded accusations made against Mr. Cheney, that he’s persona non grata in Canada, being accused of international crimes, torture, war crimes, and crimes against humanity.”

Organizer Leah Costello explained that the Bon Mot Book Club is an “intimate and exclusive high-end dinner series”, wherein her company Curious Mind Productions Inc. brings in world leaders and other high-profile speakers. Cheney will speak at a dinner event at the Vancouver Club.

“I haven’t heard anything yet,” Costello told the Straight by phone, when asked if she expects protests to greet Cheney. “But I have heard that he’s a controversial figure. That’s for sure.”

John McCain: Waterboarding is Torture

In a recent NBC interview, Cheney declared that he had “no regrets” that the American government used torture against terrorism suspects.

Asked if the U.S. should still use widely condemned techniques like waterboarding, Cheney responded: “I would strongly support using it again if circumstances arose where we had a high-value detainee and that was the only way we could get him to talk.”

According to Davidson, the government is obliged under local and international laws—such as the United Nations’ Convention Against Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment—to deny safe haven and prosecute persons accused of crimes like torture. Davidson is writing Prime Minister Stephen Harper and key cabinet ministers to outline evidence against the Bush administration and its senior officials.

“The role of Mr. Cheney is that he authorized, directed, ordered, supervised, and failed to prevent the commission of a wide range of crimes against humanity and war crimes,” Davidson said.

She has previously written to the government, suggesting steps similar to those regarding Cheney be taken when Bush visits Surrey on October 20. The ex-president has been invited by Mayor Diane Watts to the Surrey Regional Economic Summit.

In her letter dated August 25 regarding Bush’s visit, Davidson cited a transcript of a U.S. interview with Cheney in May 2009, in which Cheney stated that Bush authorized torture. He said: “I mean it was a presidential-level decision. And the decision went to the president. He signed off on it.”

Speaking to the Straight, Davidson said that the evidence against the Bush administration is well known and part of the public record. The documentation contained in Davidson’s August 25 letter includes a statement from now retired U.S. army Maj.-Gen. Antonio Taguba, who looked into abuses at Iraq’s Abu Ghraib prison. Taguba stated that “the Commander-in-Chief [Bush] and those under him authorized a systematic regime of torture”.

The Vancouver lawyer also cited a 2004 report by the International Committee of the Red Cross that the American military used interrogation techniques amounting to torture on prisoners at Guantanamo Bay, a U.S. naval base in Cuba. She likewise mentioned a 2007 Council of Europe Parliamentary Assembly report that spoke about a “whole series of illegal acts in Europe” by the CIA through “extraordinary rendition”, a practice in which individuals are abducted from one country and sent to another, to be detained and tortured for information in secret locations.

Davidson stressed that when Canada ratified the international convention against torture, it accepted a duty not just to Canadians but to everyone. And that is to “take effective measures to prevent and punish torture wherever it occurs, whatever the nationality of the victims are, and whatever the nationality of the perpetrators”.

After 10 Years, 75% of New Yorkers Never Saw Footage of WTC Building 7

Obama, Bush, Bloomberg to Bar 9/11 First Responders From Ground Zero On the 10th Anniversary

Nearly 1,020 first responders have lost their lives in the last 10 years due to health problems caused by the air quality at Ground Zero.

Many more are still suffering from health problems, while still battling with the U.S. Government for proper health coverage.

The first responders who lost their lives since 9/11 add to the victim total of that tragic day. Not only should we honor them for their service and courage — after all, they were the ones who stood up when we were all in shock — but they should be at the center stage of the upcoming official ceremony in New York City.

When debris rained from the sky in lower Manhattan on September 11, 2001, the first responders to the 9/11 attack did not turn away. They rushed to the World Trade Center buildings while the world around them crumbled. Yet now, after all the wreckage has been cleared and the rebuilding has begun, their path is again blocked by space constraints and politics.

Politicians More Important Than 9/11 First Responders

In addition to the victims’ families, several politicians, including two presidents, are expected to be in attendance.

Politicians have barred these brave men and women from the official ceremony site this year. The first responders are not invited to this year’s September 11 memorial ceremony at ground zero, New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s office confirmed in August.

In a statement, Bloomberg spokesman Andrew Brent said the commemoration ceremony is for the victims’ families.

“While we are again focused on accommodating victims’ family members, given the space constraints, we’re working to find ways to recognize and honor first responders, and other groups, at different places and times,” Brent said.

But first responder John Feal, founder of an advocacy group for the police officers, firefighters, civilian volunteers and others who worked at ground zero, assailed Brent’s response, saying Bloomberg “lives in his own world.”

“The best of the best that this country offered 10 years ago are being neglected and denied their rightful place,” Feal said.

Yet first responder Morris Faitelewicz, vice president of the Auxiliary Police Supervisors Benevolent Association, called that explanation “nonsense.” Faitelewicz said that, while there are not usually formal invitations, first responders have been able to attend all of the previous ceremonies simply by showing up.

Denise Villamia, a first responder who worked at ground zero for several months, cried over the phone as she recalled her “totally heartbroken” reaction to the news that she could not attend the memorial service.

“I’m crying because it’s really a big betrayal on the part of the city, to rob me from my way to pay homage and to find that comfort and healing,” she said. “I feel that I have been robbed of my way to pay tribute.”

Not allowing them to attend this year — the 10th anniversary of the terror attacks — is an especially galling affront, he said.

As if barring them from this year’s ceremony was not enough, the tens of thousands of cops, firefighters, construction workers and others who risked their lives were recently informed that their names must be run through the FBI’s terrorism watch list. Any of the responders who are not compared to the database of suspected terrorists would be barred from getting treatment for the numerous, worsening ailments that the James Zadroga 9/11 Health And Compensation Law was passed to address. Why are we accepting this?

Despite the passage in December of the $4.2 billion Zagroda Act, which provides medical treatment and compensation to responders, many first responders told CNN that the government has failed to address their health needs.

Giebfried has suffered from a failing liver and kidneys, a crushed arm, elbow and wrist; post-traumatic stress disorder, chronic fatigue, encroaching lupus and other diseases. All were caused by the dust, debris and other substances to which she was exposed on 9/11, she said.

Giebfried said her ongoing medical travails have disabused her of the belief that the United States honors and looks after its service members. Being excluded from the memorial proceedings was yet another confirmation of this, she said.

Obama, Bush and Bloomberg Should Bar Themselves From 9/11 Ceremony in New York City

Leaving first responders and survivors out of the 10th anniversary is absolutely ludicrous and we should all be concerned of the message it sends to those who will have to stand up for their country and fellow brothers and sisters in need if another terrorist attack ever occurs again on American soil.

U.S politicians, including Barack Obama and former President George W. Bush have missed a golden occasion for reconciliation with a group that deserves our outmost respect. If their presence makes it too “difficult” to allow 9/11 first responders on the site, they should bar themselves from ground zero instead of positioning for the camera, and leave room for the true heros of our generation. They should pick another spot in their obvious goal to stand before the cameras and gain political points.

There is still time for either, politicians to realize the mess they are creating, once again, in the only name of “politics”, and to accommodate 9/11 first responders to the site, or for us to stand up and tell that very government they are not invited to the ceremony.

Because one thing is clear, if 9/11 first responders are not allowed on the site this year, it will be yet another huge slap in the face to all Americans from a political system that has failed them far too many times. And at the end, the only people we will have to blame for this hard-to-believe mess is we, the people, for not standing up for those who risked and gave their lives for us.

Judge allows American to sue Rumsfeld over torture

WASHINGTON | Associated Press

A federal judge has ruled that former Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld can be sued personally for damages by a former U.S. military contractor who says he was tortured during a nine-month imprisonment in Iraq.

The lawsuit lays out a dramatic tale of the disappearance of the then-civilian contractor, an Army veteran in his 50s whose identity is being withheld from court filings for fear of retaliation. Attorneys for the man, who speaks five languages and worked as a translator for Marines collecting intelligence in Iraq, say he was preparing to come home to the United States on annual leave when he was abducted by the U.S. military and held without justification while his family knew nothing about his whereabouts or even whether he was still alive.

The government says he was suspected of helping pass classified information to the enemy and helping anti-coalition forces get into Iraq. But he was never charged with a crime, and he says he never broke the law and was risking his life to help his country.

Court papers filed on his behalf say he was repeatedly abused while being held at Camp Cropper, a U.S. military facility near the Baghdad airport dedicated to holding “high-value” detainees, then suddenly released without explanation in August 2006.

Two years later, he filed suit in U.S. District Court in Washington arguing that Rumsfeld personally approved torturous interrogation techniques on a case-by-case basis and controlled his detention without access to courts in violation of his constitutional rights.

Chicago attorney Mike Kanovitz, who is representing the plaintiff, says it appears the military wanted to keep his client behind bars so he couldn’t tell anyone about an important contact he made with a leading sheik while helping collect intelligence in Iraq.

“The U.S. government wasn’t ready for the rest of the world to know about it, so they basically put him on ice,” Kanovitz said in a telephone interview. “If you’ve got unchecked power over the citizens, why not use it?”

The Obama administration has represented Rumsfeld through the Justice Department and argued that the former defense secretary cannot be sued personally for official conduct. The Justice Department also argued that a judge cannot review wartime decisions that are the constitutional responsibility of Congress and the president. And the department said the case could disclose sensitive information and distract from the war effort and that the threat of liability would impede future military decisions.

But U.S. District Judge James Gwin rejected those arguments and said U.S. citizens are protected by the Constitution at home or abroad during wartime.

“The court finds no convincing reason that United States citizens in Iraq should or must lose previously declared substantive due process protections during prolonged detention in a conflict zone abroad,” Gwin wrote in a ruling issued Tuesday.

“The stakes in holding detainees at Camp Cropper may have been high, but one purpose of the constitutional limitations on interrogation techniques and conditions of confinement even domestically is to strike a balance between government objectives and individual rights even when the stakes are high,” the judge ruled.

In many other cases brought by foreign detainees, judges have dismissed torture claims made against U.S. officials for their personal involvement in decisions over prisoner treatment. But this is the second time a federal judge has allowed U.S. citizens to sue Rumsfeld personally.

U.S. District Judge Wayne R. Andersen in Illinois last year said two other Americans who worked in Iraq as contractors and were held at Camp Cropper, Donald Vance and Nathan Ertel, can pursue claims that they were tortured using Rumsfeld-approved methods after they alleged illegal activities by their company. Rumsfeld is appealing that ruling, which Gwin cited.

The U.S. Supreme Court sets a high bar for suing high-ranking officials, requiring that they be tied directly to a violation of constitutional rights and must have clearly understood their actions crossed that line.

The case before Gwin involves a man who went to Iraq in December 2004 to work with an American-owned defense contracting firm. He was assigned as an Arabic translator for Marines gathering intelligence in Anbar. He says he was the first American to open direct talks with Abdul-Sattar Abu Risha, who became an important U.S. ally and later led a revolt of Sunni sheiks against al-Qaida before being killed by a bomb.

In November 2005, when he was to go on home leave, Navy Criminal Investigative Service agents questioned him about his work, refusing his requests for representation by his employer, the Marines or an attorney. The Justice Department says he was told he was suspected of helping provide classified information to the enemy and helping anti-coalition forces attempting to cross from Syria into Iraq.

He says he always denied any wrongdoing.
